The nineties did something to the humble t-shirt that nobody has quite managed to replicate since. The weight was different. The fit was different. That slightly boxy, slightly dropped shoulder shape that looked effortless on Kurt Cobain and still looks right today when you get it on an actual body. The problem is the difference between a t-shirt that references that era and one that actually captures it is enormous, and most get it badly wrong by leaning too hard into the nostalgia.
What we have been looking for are the ones that get the proportions right without the costume quality feel. Fabric weight matters here more than almost anything. Too light and it drapes wrong. Too stiff and it never relaxes into itself. The graphic choices matter too. We are interested in the ones that feel like something you might have actually owned rather than something designed by committee to sell the idea of the nineties. These are the real ones.
