The black polo sits in an interesting place in a man’s wardrobe. Smarter than a t-shirt, less committed than a shirt, and in the right fabric and fit, genuinely capable of carrying an outfit without any help. The problem is that most of them are terrible. Either the collar rolls within an hour, the fabric pills after three washes, or the fit is cut for nobody in particular. We’ve spent time looking specifically at polos where the pique or knit construction holds its structure, where the placket lies flat without forcing it, and where the colour stays properly black rather than fading to something indeterminate. These work tucked into tailored trousers for something approaching smart casual, or worn loose over chinos when you want to look considered without trying visibly. A black polo done right is one of the most quietly useful things in a wardrobe. These are the ones that actually deliver on that promise.
